The beautiful histsoric bastide of Sainte-Foy-la-Grande sits between Bergerac and St Emilion on the river Dordogne. The area is surrounded by colourful countryside and is known as "Pays Foyen" where the Gironde, Dordogne and Lot-et-Garonne meet.
One of several fortified towns in the Gironde dating back to the 12th Century, Sainte-Foy-la-Grande is relaxed, refined and full of culture and tradition.
There are ample cafes and restaurants in the town plus an excellent market selling local produce such as truffles and foie gras which is a real bonus if you are staying in a self catering villa or apartment.
And if you enjoy wine, you will be spoilt for choice with so many vineyards offering wine tasting especially aroud St Emilion and Bergerac and a little further west of Bordeaux in Medoc and Haut Medoc.

Things to see and do
This medieval town is the ideal spot to relax and unwind and soak up the atmosphere and yet there is so much to see and do all within a few hours drive at the most. Sainte-Foy-la-Grande and the surrounding area is full of interesting villages, historic cities and countryside to explore.

- The bustling city of Bordeaux is just over an hours drive (90km) and is well worth the trip. Back streets packed with boutiques and restaurants, riverside cafes, art and museums...
- Visit the pre-historic caves of Lascaux
- Hourtin-Carcans is the largest lake in France and is surrounded by beautiful beaches backing on to pine forests plus there is a good selection of watersports - around 2 hours drive towards the coast
Our view on Sainte-Foy-la-Grande
We think this pretty country town, the smallest comune in France, is one of those places you'll fall in love with and return to year after year. During the summer, its a melting pot of tourists from all over the world who go to soak up the atmosphere, wine and dine and simply have a good time.
