Fort Augustus Guide & Reviews Top Things to See & Do in Fort Augustus, Loch Ness, Scottish Highlands

Fort Augustus is a historical settlement in the parish of Boleskine and Abertarff on the south-western banks of Loch Ness next to the Caledonian Canal. The town has a population of around 400 people but these numbers are swelled with tourists who come to relax and enjoy the wonderful countryside.

During the summer, Fort Augustus is a mecca for hikers who come to walk the Great Glen, mountain bikers and general outdoor enthusiasts who use the town as a base to explore Loch Ness.

Hill walking is popular in the winter as is ski touring when there is sufficient snow cover. Deer stalking and shooting continue through the winter months and it is possible to fish for large pike before the salmon fishing season opens on 15th January. Whisky distillery tours are popular at this time of year - sampling the local whisky or "water of life".
