Ballachulish is a historical village in Lochaber known for its slate quarries. The town sits on the western shores of Loch Leven, a 6km long sea loch, giving spectacular views of the loch and mountains that surround it.
During the summer, Ballachulish is a mecca for hikers, mountain bikers and general outdoor enthusiasts who use the town as a base to explore the nearby lochs such as Loch Linnhe and Loch Leven with its high waterfalls and rivers.
Hill walking is popular in the winter as is skiing at nearby Glencoe Mountain when there is sufficient snow cover. Deer stalking and shooting continue through the winter months and it is possible to fish for large pike before the salmon fishing season opens on 15th January. Whisky distillery tours are popular at this time of year - sampling the local whisky or "water of life".

Nevis Range Skiing
Ballachulish is only 14 miles from Glencoe ski centre and 28 miles from the Nevis Range where there are many things to see and do throughout the year. In the summer, there is rafting, hiking and mountain biking along wooded trails and through the glens.
During the winter, when snow conditions are good, skiing at Glencoe or at the Nevis Range can be as good as the Alps.
Kinlochleven
This pretty village lies at the eastern end of Loch Leven and is a good base for hill walking through the glens and along the many streams and rivers. It is also home to the Blackwater Reservoir created by the 914m wide Blackwater Dam built in 1905.

The ruins of this medieval castle date back to the 6th century AD. With panoramic views of Loch Ness and the Great Glen, Urquhart Castle is one of the top things to see and do in the Fort Augustus area.
