Lake Walchsee, in the busy holiday area of Kaiserwinkl is a popular base for exploring this beautiful region in the heart of the Austrian Tirol and just a short drive to Upper Bavarian Inntal on the German border.
The lake is surrounded by steep foothills covered in thick forests and snow capped mountains of the Wilder Kaiser and Zahmer Kaiser chains beyond.
During the summer, with it's Mediterranean climate, the lake is a magnet for swimmers and water sports enthusiasts while during the winter, there is the Zahmer Kaiser ski resort with 5 lifts, 70km of cross-country trails and a natural ice rink.
The main village on the lake is called Walchsee which is charming, quaint and very relaxed - an ideal place to chill out and unwind. There are bars,restaurants, spa & wellness and an aquatic centre.

The only place to stay lakeside is in the pretty and quaint village of Walchsee where you'll find a good mix of very friendly family run hotels and private holiday rentals such as gorgeous chalets and apartments with lake views.
Just a few minutes drive from the lake is the small village of Kössen which also has a good selection of accommodation options and if you are visiting in winter, there is a small ski area.
